Building a mobile app can feel like a black box. You have an idea. A development team takes it away. Weeks or months later, something appears in the App Store. What actually happens in between?
Here's our process, step by step. No vague "agile methodology" hand-waving. Just the actual steps we follow on every mobile app project.
Before we write any code, we need to understand what we're building and why. We'll ask you about the problem you're solving, who the users are, what the must-have features are, and what success looks like.
The output is a scope document: a clear list of features, user types, and technical requirements. This is what we'll quote against and build from. If you already have wireframes or a detailed spec, this step is faster.
We create wireframes for every screen in the app. These aren't pixel-perfect designs yet — they're layout sketches that show how users will move through the app. You'll review these and we'll iterate until the flow feels right.
Then we move to visual design. Colours, typography, icons, and the overall look and feel. If you have brand guidelines, we work within them. If you don't, we'll propose a direction.
We design for both iOS and Android, accounting for platform-specific conventions. iOS users expect certain patterns. Android users expect different ones. A good cross-platform app respects both.
This is where the app gets built. We work in 1-2 week sprints, delivering working features at the end of each sprint. You'll see progress regularly, not just at the end.
We typically build with Flutter or React Native for cross-platform development. One codebase, two platforms. This saves significant time and money compared to building separate native apps.
Throughout development, we share builds you can install on your phone and test. Real testing on real devices, not just screenshots.
We test on multiple devices and OS versions. Different screen sizes, different Android manufacturers, different iOS versions. The goal is to catch issues before your users do.
Got an app idea?
We handle everything from concept to App Store submission. Let's talk about yours.
Start Your AppWe test the obvious: does every feature work? And the less obvious: what happens with no internet? What if the user rotates their phone mid-form? What if they get a phone call while using the app?
We also run a beta with a small group of real users when possible. Their feedback catches things that internal testing misses.
Submitting to the App Store and Google Play involves more than uploading a file. You need app store listings (descriptions, screenshots, keywords), privacy policies, age ratings, and compliance with each store's guidelines.
Apple's review process is stricter and can take 1-3 days. They'll check for guideline compliance, test basic functionality, and sometimes request changes. Google Play is usually faster but has its own requirements.
We handle the entire submission process. We've been through it enough times to know what triggers review delays and how to avoid them.
Once approved, the app goes live. But launch isn't the end — it's the beginning. We set up crash reporting and analytics so you can see how users interact with the app and catch issues early.
The first few weeks after launch are critical. Real users at scale will find things that testing didn't catch. We prioritise these fixes and push updates quickly.
A simple app (5-10 screens, standard features) typically takes 8-12 weeks from start to App Store. A more complex app (15+ screens, integrations, custom features) is 12-20 weeks.
Cost depends on complexity. We've written about this in detail in our guide to custom software costs in Australia.
Timely feedback on designs and builds — delays on review slow the whole project. Access to any existing systems we need to integrate with. App Store and Google Play developer accounts (we can help you set these up). And a point person who can make decisions without committee approval for each question.
If you've got an app idea and want to understand the path from here to the App Store, get in touch. We'll walk through the process with you, give you a realistic timeline and quote, and help you figure out the right scope for launch.
